As I moved through 2016 making my new healthy choices, drinking alcohol became the elephant in the room for me and my partner, and we knew deep down we had to address what we felt was holding us back.
We are all different in the way we handle drinking alcohol, and everyone has a different perspective on what is an acceptable level of drinking. Justifying why you drink is actually very easy to do, and it’s what kept us ‘stuck’ in the alcohol rut for so many years. Although we agreed that drinking a few glasses of wine pretty much most evenings is what ‘everyone’ does, we knew it was not good for us and it was not until we read more about it that the penny finally dropped.
I feel thankful that a friend decided to ‘pay it forward’ and post us a book by Jason Vale that he’d just read called ‘Kick The Drink…easily’. I can’t even remember how we got into conversation, about alcohol, but he was excited about the book, and just took the initiative to post it on. My partner was first to pick it up, and commit to reading this 300-page book, which he did in just a few days and when he’d finished he turned to me and said – ‘I’m done!’ Wow I was shocked, but immediately picked up the book and started reading. Now, I’m going to be totally honest and say that this was NOT the finest book I’ve ever read. Jason’s style is to bang on and on to get his point across, but the bottom line is when the student is ready the teacher will appear – and Jason Vale had 2 very open minded participants.
So for us, the book did the job in positioning alcohol in a totally different light – from thinking a few glasses of wine was making us relaxed and happy to seeing alcohol as an addictive substance, that was not serving us one little bit. If you read the book and you are ready, then you’ll end up seeing any alcohol as a poison, empty calories, and a total financial drain. Tough eh – but sometimes we need tough love!
Come on, let’s get serious and quit drinking alcohol
Not sure what is going to be your trigger for change, you know the thing that will flip your switch to kicking the drink. Maybe nothing will drag you away from your ‘perceived comfort’ and to be honest, that’s OK, but I do say that what you don’t know WILL harm you so you can’t knock a girl for trying.
I am happy to list some obvious reasons why kicking the drink is totally worth it, but READ the book by Jason Vale, or do your own research to get some reality into your thinking. Below are what I would call ‘soft’ reasons for quitting, the book will be much more hard hitting and should do the trick in helping you get prepared for the best decision you could ever make. Family and friends are actually not that helpful as you will be challenging their ‘comfort zone’ so they would much prefer you remain status quo. But the book will share how drinking is as addictive as cocaine, and actually far more damaging over the years but it’s just more socially acceptable to drink alcohol than snort cocaine. Some of you might be thinking right now ‘I’m in control’ ‘I only drink when I want to’ and you may be right as not everyone gets full on addicted, but again as you read the book, you will realize that the bigger picture of alcohol is that it’s a social disaster.
Before I give you some compelling reasons to quit drinking alcohol, do go and pick up a copy of Jason’s book on Amazon and start your journey to wellness today! There are, of course, other great books that you can choose about kicking the drink, but this was our catalyst. Thank you, Jason from the bottom of my heart.
Why should YOU Quit Drinking Alcohol?
1. You will feel good pretty quickly
Within just a couple of days of kicking the drink, you will begin to feel remarkably better than you did when you had alcohol swimming around your system. Once you’ve got through, the ‘habit’ of drinking, you will begin to feel a renewed energy and vitality and we were pleasantly surprised at how good that feels. Your mind and body will basically feel like they’ve been given a second chance, and that’s exactly what you’ve done!
2. Your body will start to rejuvenate
Your BRAIN will begin to heal – YES your brain shrinks each time you go on a bender and your LIVER will get the chance to repair itself over the next couple of months. Quit drinking, and BRAIN FOG and low energy will slowly but surely start to disappear. If you have been drinking on a daily basis as I know many of your are – even though you try to justify your not, you might have actually forgotten how wonderful it feels to be able to think clearly and deeply – I can’t tell you what a great feeling that is!
With your LIVER beginning to repair itself, you’ll also notice a dramatic improvement in your skin, hair, as well as your vision. If you are a heavy drinker then your complexion will show dramatic improvement. We forget how we USED to look when we didn’t drink, and how much of our facial features have deteriorated through drinking. Get used to hearing “you look great” from your family and friends because the other HUGE benefit from quitting the drink is the WEIGHT LOSS you’ll start to experience.
Many people report that their mood and outlook on life improves massivley once alcohol was out of their system, and we has noticed this BIG time.
You’ll begin to notice how ACHES and PAINS throughout your body start to slowly disappear. Alcohol magnifies those annoying aches because it was constantly robbing your body of the necessary nutrients and preventing vitamin absorption. WITHOUT alcohol getting in the way, your aches and pains will soon be a thing of the past, and again for me that has been HUGE. No more knee pain and with just under 2 stone (11kg) weight loss without even trying, that has to take the strain off my joints.
Your NATURAL ENERGY will slowly but surely return, and within just a few weeks your SLEEP quality will be amazing as you wake up more refreshed than ever before. NO longer will you struggle to overcome the previous night’s drinking, or rely on caffeine to make it through your new day. I think sleep has been one of the biggest UPSIDES to quitting the drink for us, and you can’t underestimate the power of good quality sleep to underpin your general health.
Your FIVE SENSES will return better than ever, as you begin to sober up. With your vision, taste and smell all working better than they have in years, the reality is you’ll feel better than you have in years, with sickness and tiredness all things of the past. You will have an overall ‘sense of well-being‘ as your mind, body and soul become healthier and stronger.
3. You will never have to face a hangover again!
Oh boy, the joy of waking up sober is something you will never tire of. No more headaches, nausea, tiredness or general sickness, just a renewed energy and zest for life. This is alone is one of the most fantastic reasons to quit drinking alcohol! You will be more refreshed in the morning and you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you awake. That feeling will be the new norm, as you no longer will have alcohol holding you back!
4. Stop hating yourself for wasting money.
Say au revoir to that ‘sick feeling’ over how much money you know you are wasting on booze. The best part, besides being happy with your self-control, is that can spend that new-found money on things that are way more valuable, or even save that new money to buy something special that you’ve always wanted! Think about that money as money you WOULD HAVE thrown away on booze, on empty calories, and instead you’ll be able to use it to buy something of value or pay off some debt.
You will no longer worry about needing a SUPPLY of booze and worrying about how much alcohol you have in the house, or if the shop is still open, or if you have enough for the night, or even if you have enough money to buy the booze.
You will be free from that worry!
Every aspect of your love life and relationships will be deeper, stronger, and more fulfilled. Without alcohol in the way, you will be more passionate than you’ve ever been, and this is one of the more enjoyable reasons to quit drinking alcohol!
5. You will no longer feel trapped by an addiction.
I can’t underestimate this enough, but the feeling of FREEDOM from alcohol will release you, it will feel like you’ve just been released from prison. I know this sounds over the top, but the feeling of no longer worrying whether you can drive or not, or whether you can pick up the phone to talk to someone without sounding intoxicated is HUGE!
No opportunity to miss work due to drinking or the need to lie to your boss about why you can’t make it in. If you hate your job then you’ll now have the time and energy to look for that NEW job, and being sober means you’ll look great at that new job interview! Over time your friends and family will admire you for having the strength to quit. Not only will they admire you for not drinking, but you will be a good example to them as they try to improve their lives as well!
Feel empowered with a new sense of self-worth. Feel proud and self-confident with a renewed sense of self-confidence that will make you feel better about YOU, and this powerful tool will help you as you go forward in life on your Wellness In Action focus.
6. You will be more optimistic about your future.
You will have a renewed sense of optimism for the day ahead of you, and feel so great that you’re not wasting your time and money on booze, you’ll be able to see a world filled with endless possibilities – you will simply feel stronger and more healthy! You will be happier than ever with your life and this feeling of happiness will be REAL and founded on a healthy body and mind.
You will find joy in all the little things of life, like taking a walk through the woods, on the hills or gazing up at the stars at night and just feel ‘connected’ to life. Of all the reasons to quit drinking alcohol, I think this might be the best one!
Alcohol won’t be on your daily list of priorities and you will enjoy a renewed exuberance for doing things that you didn’t have the time, energy or money to do before.
